This spectacular play of color is not due to light reflecting from the surface, but rather from light interference and diffraction within the stone's thinly layered internal structure of plagioclase feldspar minerals. At first glance, Labradorite often appears as a dull grayish-green or dark stone, but when light catches it at the right angle, it reveals its hidden spectrum of colors. It typically exhibits a vitreous to pearly luster when polished.
