Its distinctive smoky color is caused by natural irradiation from granite deposits and impurities of aluminum within the crystal structure. It exhibits a vitreous luster and can be transparent to translucent. Some varieties, like Morion, are very dark, almost opaque.Smoky Quartz has a Mohs hardness of 7, making it relatively hard.
